Many people think that self defense is all about protecting yourself and your property, but there are many other reasons. When it comes down to it we don't go through this world alone, and human beings need others to love and support them. Think about who is important to you in your life, whether it is your family, friends, or a lover these are all people you want to keep from harm, but just wanting them to be safe isn't enough. You have to make the effort to keep them and yourself safe, and you can't do that without training. As long as there are people willing to do anything to get what they want you need to be willing to do whatever is necessary to keep them from taking it.

We live in a modern age where being self reliance isn't as necessary as it once was largely because people can get help so quickly. Cell phones, blackberries, and other electronic devices keep us in constant contact and from getting lost and allow authorities to send help faster then ever before. That's great, but what are you going to do until help arrives? Even if police can get to you fairly quickly a mugger or killer will still have enough time to do what they want to do to you or someone you love. Whether you like it or not you might have to fight for your life someday. Now maybe you still feel secure, because you're never alone and you're confident in the abilities of the person you're with.

Well, well can't count on someone else protecting you, and it isn't because they won't try, but they won't always be there, and the odds won't always be in their favor. One case that will never fade from my memory was one told by a rape survivor about her attack. She and her boyfriend were enjoying a lovely moon lit walk on the beach when four men attacked the couple. They beat her boyfriend and held him down as they took turns raping her before escaping into the night. If a criminal is attacking you they're only attacking because they think they can win quickly, but if you're able to fight back together you turn the tables on them.

So, when you think about self defense don't just think about yourself, because you don't want to see anyone close to you get hurt. Invite friends and family to train with you and include young children also so they can begin learning the fundamentals early. Regardless of age, sex, or overall health everyone can learn effective techniques to protect themselves or at the very least they will learn how to avoid potential dangers. Couples should train together so they will know what to do right away if attacked, and the sooner you start fighting back the more likely you are to survive. These days most people don't think in tribal terms, but when it comes to you and your tribe things become privative really fast, so know what to do when things go bad.
